Category Sensation – Acronym CU
Pump Cupping (Plastic)
This is the most common and accessible method in BDSM. Plastic cups are placed on the skin, and a hand pump is used to extract the air. This gives the top (the person applying the cups) precise control over the exact level of suction and intensity.
Silicone Cups
These are flexible cups that are squeezed by hand and placed on the skin, creating suction as they attempt to return to their original shape. They usually provide lighter suction and are often used for moving cupping (sliding the cups along lubricated skin).
Fire Cupping (Glass)
This is an advanced, traditional method where a flaming cotton ball is briefly placed inside a glass cup to consume the oxygen before the cup is quickly applied to the skin. As the air cools, it creates a vacuum. In BDSM, this adds an element of fire play, heat sensation, and psychological intensity, but it requires significant skill to avoid burning the receiver.
Mark-Making
Cupping leaves very distinct, perfectly circular bruises (known as petechiae). For many practitioners, leaving visible, long-lasting marks on a submissive’s body is a powerful form of ownership, branding, and psychological dominance.
Sensation Play and Endorphins
The intense pulling sensation triggers the body’s pain response, leading to a steady release of endorphins. As the cups sit, the sensation often fades into a deep, heavy warmth that can help induce “sub space” (a deeply relaxed, trance-like state).
Pre-Play Sensitivity (Warming Up)
Because cupping aggressively draws blood to the surface of the skin, the targeted area becomes hyper-sensitive. Tops will often use cupping to prepare the skin before engaging in impact play (like flogging or spanking) or needle play.
Aesthetic and Ritual
Placing the cups in precise, geometric patterns along the back or thighs can be a slow, highly ritualistic, and visually striking process.
Time Limits
This is the most critical safety factor. Cups should generally not be left in one place for more than 10 to 15 minutes. Leaving them on too long can cause severe fluid-filled blisters (bullae) or damage the underlying tissue.
Target Areas
Cupping is safest on broad, flat, fleshy areas with plenty of muscle and fat, such as the back, shoulders, buttocks, and upper thighs.
Areas to Avoid
Cups must never be placed over the front or sides of the neck (due to the carotid arteries and jugular veins), directly on the spine, over major joints, or on areas with thin skin or varicose veins.
Thorough negotiation is mandatory, specifically regarding how intense the suction should be and whether the receiver is comfortable having highly visible marks that may last for a week or more. Because the marks are essentially localized bruises, aftercare involves monitoring the skin, providing hydration, applying soothing lotions (like arnica for bruising), and offering the standard emotional reassurance required after an intense scene.
