Flogging

Flogging is the standard and most widely used term for what is formally known as flagellation. It is an incredibly popular and versatile form of impact play that involves striking a partner with a multi-tailed implement known as a flogger. Because floggers come in an endless variety of materials and weights, flogging can range from a light, sensual massage to heavy, intense impact.

THE IMPLEMENT
AND SENSATION

A typical flogger consists of a handle attached to multiple “tails” or “falls.” The sensation produced by a flogger is almost entirely dependent on the material it is made from and the technique of the person swinging it:

Sensual/Light
Floggers made from ultra-soft materials like suede, deerskin, or silk are often used for “sensory flogging.” They feel like a heavy blanket or a warm massage and are rarely painful.
ThudFloggers
Made from heavy, thick, or dense materials—such as heavy cowhide, bullhide, or thick rubber—deliver a deep, resonant impact that penetrates the muscle. This creates a warming, heavy sensation (thud) rather than sharp pain.
StingFloggers
Made from thin, stiff, or lightweight materials—such as paracord, thin rawhide, or PVC—cut through the air quickly and deliver a sharp, biting surface-level pain (sting).

SAFETY AND
TARGET AREAS

Flogging requires specific techniques to ensure the tails land exactly where intended and do not wrap around the receiver’s body.

Target Areas
The primary targets are the broad, fleshy areas of the body that can safely absorb impact. This includes the upper back (across the shoulder blades), the buttocks, and the meaty parts of the thighs.
Areas to Avoid
It is critical to avoid the spine, the neck, the back of the knees, and the lower back (where the kidneys are exposed).
The Danger of “Wrapping”
A major safety focus in flogging is preventing the tails from swinging past the target area and “wrapping” around the torso to strike unprotected areas like the ribs, stomach, or breasts.

PURPOSE AND
DYNAMICS

Flogging is deeply psychological and physiological, serving several purposes in a scene:

Endorphin High and Trance States
The repetitive, rhythmic nature of flogging, combined with the physical impact, triggers a massive release of endorphins. This often induces a deep, euphoric, trance-like state known as “sub space” for the receiver. The person swinging the flogger (often called the “top” or “Dom”) can also enter a focused, rhythmic flow state known as “top space.”
Warm-Up
Heavy “thud” floggers are frequently used at the beginning of a scene to warm up the skin and flood the body with endorphins before moving on to sharper implements like canes or crops.
Energy Exchange
For many practitioners, flogging is less about pain or punishment and more about a rhythmic, intimate exchange of energy and trust between partners.

CONSENT AND
FRAMEWORKS

Like all BDSM activities, flogging relies entirely on explicit, prior consent. It is practiced under ethical frameworks such as SSC (Safe, Sane, and Consensual) or RACK (Risk-Aware Consensual Kink).
Before engaging, partners negotiate hard limits, discuss the types of sensations they want, and establish safewords to pause or stop the activity. Because flogging can be physically exhausting and emotionally intense, dedicated aftercare—providing warmth, hydration, and emotional grounding—is a mandatory part of the process.
