Category Restraint – Acronym SU
Partial vs. Full Suspension
In a partial suspension, some part of the submissive’s body (like their toes or knees) remains in contact with the ground to bear some of the weight. In a full suspension, the body is completely airborne.
Lines and Harnesses
Riggers typically use a complex, structurally sound chest or hip harness made of rope to support the core body weight, with additional lines controlling the limbs.
Hardware and Hardpoints
The practice relies on load-bearing hardware (like climbing-grade carabiners, pulleys, and suspension rings). The ropes are attached to “hardpoints”-structurally engineered anchors in a ceiling or a heavy-duty metal frame designed specifically to safely hold dynamic human weight.
Load Distribution
Riggers often use bamboo poles or metal bars (spreader bars) within the rope lines to distribute the physical load and prevent the ropes from crushing the submissive’s body together.
Total Surrender
Giving up not just physical movement, but gravity itself, is an act of ultimate vulnerability. The submissive’s safety and physical orientation are entirely in the hands of the rigger.
Sensory and Emotional High
The intense pressure of the ropes combined with the sensation of weightlessness triggers a massive flood of endorphins and adrenaline. This frequently pushes the suspended person into a deep, euphoric, and meditative psychological state known as “rope space” or subspace.
Aesthetics
Suspension is deeply rooted in the visual arts. The contrast of the rigid ropes against the floating, vulnerable human body is considered highly beautiful and expressive.
Nerve Damage
Bearing human weight on thin ropes can easily compress major nerve clusters (particularly the radial and ulnar nerves in the arms). If a nerve is compressed for even a few minutes too long, it can cause temporary paralysis or permanent motor-function loss.
Circulation Hazards
The ropes can restrict blood flow, leading to rapid fainting, tissue damage, or blood clots.
Hardware Failure and Drops
If a rope snaps, a knot slips, or a ceiling anchor fails, a sudden drop can result in catastrophic injuries, including broken bones or spinal damage.
Strict Emergency Protocols
Safety dictates that the rigger must constantly communicate with the submissive, checking their circulation, nerve sensation, and breathing. The rigger must always have specialized rescue shears (like EMT shears or hook knives) immediately on hand to cut the person down in seconds during a medical emergency.
